Red Wolves used to be the top predators in the Temperate Deciduous Forest. They balanced out the forest ecosystem . They prey on animals such as rabbits, deer, and small rodents. They were threatened by human activity and by interbreeding with coyotes. They were protected by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service once they were declared endangered. The Red Wolf population is now healthy and keeps the food chain in balance once again.
